Which Book?

Christmas is the busiest time of year for book sales but choosing the right book can be difficult.

A good cover attracts our attention, but, you can never judge a book by its cover. A simple and memorable title is helpful also. Some titles are very funny, for example; ‘What to Say When You Talk to Yourself’, and ‘What Not to Wear on a Horse’.

Recently, I came across a book with a sad title, called ‘Broken Promises’. It was about the Native American Indians who lost their traditional lands as more and more settlers went to live in America and gold was discovered. Despite many promises and agreements made to the Indians by the government, eventually the promises were broken and their lands were taken from them.

There is one book with a plain cover and simple title that makes some very special promises; ‘the Bible’. The promises are called “better promises” (Hebrews 8:6) as they are not made by man but by God. Peter, a fisherman from Galilee who became a follower of Jesus Christ, called them “exceeding great and precious promises” (2 Peter 1:4).

God promises to give us eternal life and a place in heaven when we die. He doesn’t want us to try and earn it or work for it. How then? By believing what His Son, Jesus Christ has already done on our behalf. Jesus, came into this world, and died on a cross for our sins (He wasn’t there for any of his own wrongdoings). Three days later he arose from the grave and was seen and spoken to by his disciples. He is alive having conquered death. By believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and saviour all the promises of God become yours. God never breaks His promises, He keeps them all.

The most important thing about any book is not the cover or the title but the author and what he has to say to us. God has only written one book and covered everything from the beginning of time to the end of time. His promises even takes you beyond time here on earth and into Heaven itself.
